Read the story aloud slowly in Filipino then in English or the dominant language if needed. Ask the child questions that would  predict the next part of the story or check their understanding.

Explain the meaning of key words that may help the child grasp the meaning of the story.

Noong Unang Panahon: Si Malakas at Maganda ni/by Rafaelita Valera (Adarna House, 2005)

In English: According to the Tagalog and Bisayan, the world was a vast and empty space where no single human being lived. There were no mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, grandfathers and grandmothers, aunts and uncles, even cousins. There were only plants and animals that lived in paradise. One time the king of the birds was hungry, He flew and and found a bamboo to pecked at. All of a sudden, the bamboo split in half and out came Malakas then Maganda. They were the first human beings on earth. They introduced themselves to one another and rode on the back of the bird until they found a place to live. This was the Philippines.
