Read the story aloud slowly in Filipino then in English or the dominant language if needed. Ask the child questions that would predict the next part of the story or check their understanding.

Explain the meaning of key words that may help the child grasp the meaning of the story.

Ibong Adarna ni/by Roberto Alonzo (Adarna House, 2008 ikalawang edisyon)

In English:

Once upon a time, in the  faraway kingdom of Berbania, there was a king with three sons: Don Pedro, Don Diego and Don Juan. One day, King Fernando got ill. No doctors could help him get better. An old man came to tell them that only the song of the Ibong Adarna that can be found in Mount Tabor can help him feel better. Don Pedro left to look for it. He saw the Ibong Adarna which was beautiful and colourful. When it started to sing Don Pedro fell asleep and turned into stone. Don Diego followed suit and the same fate befell him. Finally, Don Juan left. During his journey he met a leper whom he helped by giving him food and water. The leper suddenly changed appearance and told Don Juan how to capture the bird. He was given lemon, a razor and a bottle of holy water. When the Ibong Adarna sang, Don Juan did not fall asleep because he slashed his arms with the razor and squeezed lemon juice over it. He was able to catch the bird, poured holy water over the stones which became his two brothers. They all returned to the kingdom and helped their father get better.
